WHY I LOVE TO COOK

Let's start with the how.

I can't recall how many times I've been asked how I learned to cook.  I always answer and say that my mom made sure I knew how to cook. She would require me to help in the kitchen every Sunday.

But the truth is, my dad played a really big part in it, too.

You see, my dad is a midnight snacker.  There can only be 3 reasons why he would wake me up in the middle of the night:

1. He brought home food and my sisters and I have to eat with him. (most of the time, Savory chicken from Binondo)
2. He needs me to dress up because we are going out to eat. (we usually end up at some hole-in-the-wall restaurant in China Town or Malate)
3. He needs me to cook.

I loved 1 and 2.  I did not like #3.

Because, man, my dad is picky about food.  He'd give me instructions on what to do and if I did it wrong, I would be doomed. He's my Gordon Ramsay and I am a contender in Hell's Kitchen.  I once served him overcooked scrambled eggs and he sent me back to the kitchen to do it all over again (and I had to eat those overcooked eggs). Why was his steak well done when he wanted it medium well? Why was I serving him hotdogs and no ketchup?  He was strict about food that way.  But it was through these late night trips to the kitchen that I learned what goes well with what, and how certain food should be prepared.

It's been 8 years since my dad passed away and among the thousands of things I miss about him, it's cooking for him and sharing a meal with him that I miss the most.

Joaquin never got to meet my dad but it seems like he is a lot like him.  They have the same temper, they both (and I do this, too) like lying down in bed with their legs "de kwatro" (a Filipino term for crossed legs), and they both love eating a second dinner late at night.

At least 3 nights a week, when my son and I are in bed, he would suddenly sit up and say "Mama, I'm hungry. Let's go downstairs.".  I would try to get out of it by saying that it's time for bed and I'm tired and sleepy but then he would say, "But I'm hungry. My tummy is owie."  And what kind of mother would I be if I let my son sleep starving?

If there's food leftover from dinner, then we just heat it up but most nights, I find myself cooking instant noodles or frying hotdogs and I would watch my little boy eat with gusto.  It is when I watch Joaquin eat that I remember Papa and how he would smile while eating and say "Sarap, anak! Pwede na tayo magtayo ng restaurant.".  I remember how hearing those compliments would be music to my ears because as a daughter, and this goes for I think anyone, there is a certain euphoria from getting your parent's approval and hearing them give you high praises.

And that is why I love to cook.  Aside from the fact that I love to eat, cooking brings me memories of Papa waking me up in the middle of the night because he's hungry.  It is the memory of Mama summoning me to the kitchen every Sunday and teaching me recipes.  And now I'm raising a little boy who I hope will remember the tender moments we spend in the kitchen table late at night, talking and eating.

Of course, when Joaquin is a little older, probably in a couple of years, I will have to teach him to cook as well, so I can be like my dad. Hehe!

So I was reading this article on the NY Times this morning and I don't know if my parents were aware that telling me and my sisters stories of our family's roots, trials and victories would equip us to handle challenges more effectively but you know what, I'd like to say it worked.

"The bottom line: if you want a happier family, create, refine and retell the story of your family’s positive moments and your ability to bounce back from the difficult ones. That act alone may increase the odds that your family will thrive for many generations to come."

Now that I'm a parent, I have challenges of my own and I find myself being inspired by how my Lola would wake up early everyday to either go to Baclaran or go from office to office to sell her Baclaran finds just to earn money.  Or how my lolo grew his fleet of jeepneys. Or how my mom managed to work 2 positions (she had a full-time job and a business) for how many years.  Or how my dad had to sell the Rolex my Angkong gave him because we really needed the money.

Papa, being the funny guy, always told us the good stories, the stories of how he was like as a kid, how he and Mama met, where they went on their first date, how Mama was like when she was younger. My mom, on the other hand, was the storyteller of our hardships and what they had to do to go around it. I was the eldest and my mom always kept me abreast with the good, the bad and the ugly.  This was something I didn't appreciate very much when I was younger because like any teenager, I just wanted to have fun. But now that I think about it, I learned so much from them.

We grew up with a family driver but my parents forced me to learn how to commute in highschool.  Every summer, my mom would make me go with our store clerk to our boutique in Greenhills (commute again!) and make me stay there the entire day to help man the store and sell clothes.  My sisters and my cousins (who lived with us then) would take turns washing dishes every night. Papa would also bring me to different restaurants, from the fanciest to the hole-in-the-wall-carinderia type. Later on, he would explain that they want to make sure that no matter what happens in the future, we will survive.  And the reason why they have given us a taste of expensive cuisine, nice vacations and luxurious things is so that we can decide what kind of lifestyle we want to live and how hard we should work to maintain it.  Most importantly, they wanted us to simply be happy and appreciative of our life, whether we end up commuting everyday or living in a mansion.

My parents weren't perfect and we didn't exactly have a picturesque family life but I am utterly grateful that they have raised me and my sisters to be so grounded. And of course, I'll be raising Joaquin the same way.

I LOVE MY SON!

Joaquin decided to disinfect both my cellphones (my Blackberry and my very old, trusty Nokia) earlier by pouring alcohol (as in pour!) on it.

I dismantled whatever part I could take out and wiped each one dry. Then I put them back together but the keypads of both phones were malfunctioning, I couldn't even get past the password.

I got so upset that tears welled up in my eyes. I sat Joaquin on my lap, looked at him and said:

"Mama's sad. And very mad! You broke both my phones. Mama is saving money but now it looks like I have to buy new phones. I need that for work, Babe (yes, I call him that)."

My son looked at me and said, "Stop crying".

Then he wiped away my tears with his own hands.

Then he said, "Sorry, Mama."

He embraced me, patted my back while saying "It's okay, it's okay".

I felt so loved.

Then we went to sleep.

When we woke up 3 hours later, I tried using my phones again and they were back to normal.

I said a short prayer of thanks.

I love my son sooo much!

I CAN!

I told my mom about what happened to my marriage a few days ago. She seemed to understand but being Mama, she reminded me to think about my decision very very well. Being me, I told her that I've made up my mind.

After saying that, she said, "O sha! Magpapayat ka na!". Funny, Mama.

Today I got an email from my Stepdad. This is part of the email:

Mama is worried about you. I am not. I know you can take care of yourself.

I'm not super duper close to my Stepdad but we get along pretty well and when we talk, we talk. I'm glad that he believes in me.

CEBU WEEKEND

We had a blast in Cebu! But Joaquin had the most fun!

As promised, here are pictures!

He loved the plane ride! Was not scared at all!

Loved it so much that his feet were up and he was noisiest kid in the plane!

We headed to one of the Sutukil restaurants by Mactan Shrine for brunch. Didn't enjoy it so much. Food was pretty expensive and was not as good. Our Dampa here in Manila is A LOT BETTER. Should have read this before going there. Really wouldn't recommend this place to anyone.

We arrived at Cebu Marine before noon and they allowed us to check-in early (Big Yaaayy!) We loved the place! It was indeed quaint and super peaceful!!! The landscaped garden was beautiful!

I felt like we were the only ones there!

We finally saw a few guests (mostly Japanese and Europeans. Kami lang Pinoy!) around dinner time. Food was relatively good but a little pricey (or maybe I'm just kuripot, hehe!). A meal per person would probably cost PHP400.

We woke up very early Saturday morning so we can make the most out of the day. We hung out at the pool most of the time as it was super low tide.

Headed to the City Saturday afternoon and stayed at Regal Business Park Hotel which was right across Ayala Center. We only needed a clean and decent place to sleep as we were going out with V's friend anyway. For Php1,800 a night, NOT BAD at all! Room and bathroom was clean, service was good, staff were friendly! The room came with buffet breakfast (I know! Nagulat din ako!) but the choices were very limited. But still. At Php1,800 a night, pwede na!

We ate Cebu Lechon which made me think of my Dad because he was the one who introduced us to this

We headed North of Cebu (shockingly, only 15-20mins away from the city) Sunday morning to the town of Liloan where V's friend lived. We went to a Sunday food market to get lunch

And yes, we ate more lechon and I even bought a kilo to take home with me to Manila. Drool!

After a gastronomic lunch of lechon, kilawin na sea cucumber (first time to try this and its good!), roast chicken, dininding, inihwan na tulingan and uber sweet mangoes for dessert, we napped.

In the afternoon, we headed to the Liloan lighthouse called Bagacay Point Light.

All in all, it was a pretty great trip. The only thing I didn't like was how our flight heading back to Manila got delayed. From 10:40pm to 12:20am! Joaquin and I slept in the plane going back while V couldn't get some shut eye because of the turbulence. Hehe!

OFF TO CEBU!

Hubby, Joaquin and I are off to (hopefully) sunny Cebu in a few hours for some much-needed and well-deserved R&R.

Staying at Cebu Marine Resort (website could use a lot of work) in Mactan which came highly recommended by my boss who said the place was quaint and that food is good and reasonably priced. She's from Cebu and pretty picky when it comes to places so I super trust her.

Big thanks to Uncle/Ninong F for footing the bill. Yaaaay!

It's going to be Joaquin's first plane ride so I am pretty anxious to see if he will like it or not.

Will eat Cebu lechon, will eat cebu lechon, will eat cebu lechon!

So excited :) Will post pics and tell stories when I get back!

JOAQUIN TURNS 2!

For Joaquin's birthday, we had a very simple merienda get-together yesterday with family.

Joaquin had tons of fun because all his cousins were there.

Bought swiss cake from Becky's Kitchen and drizzled chocolate candies on it. It was a hit with the kids!

He was sooooo happy when everyone started singing "Happy Birthday"!

Too happy that he started stomping his feet and his shoe hit a small part of the cake. Hahaha!

It was a great day! :)

Have a wonderful week ahead!

HAPPY 2ND BIRTHDAY, JOAQUIN!

My Dearest Joaquin,

Happy 2nd Birthday, Baby!

It feels like only yesterday when I first saw you and cradled you in my arms.

You have given Papa and me the best years of our lives and I know that whatever happens, no matter how difficult things get, life will always always be beautiful because of you. You are our greatest blessing.

We will always be proud of you and wish you nothing but happiness in whatever you do. We will always be here for you and we will continue to strive to give you the best of everything.

There are no words to describe how much we love you.

Stay happy, healthy and grounded.

Love,
Mama

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, PAPA!

Dear Papa,

Unlike my previous letter to you 3 years ago, this one will be short.

I miss you. I hope you're having a blast up there and thank you for always making your presence felt in my dreams.

I love you, Papa. You are remembered fondly and missed terribly-- not just by your daughters, but also by your friends and family.

Happy Birthday!

Love always,
Bunny

UNSOLICITED NINONG

Tuesday, January 22, 2008

Mama sometimes makes me cry, sometimes she makes me laugh. But there are times when I just want to pull my hair and do both.

She called me this morning to keep tabs on my wedding planning. We were going thru the menu of Nurture Spa when she said...

Mama: Are you sure you want to get married na? You really love V? Kasi if you're not sure, don't get married na lang.
Me: (screaming inside)

After a year ofmaking me kulit to tie the knot, after she just bought her plane ticket going back home, after she just bought my wedding gown (yes, decided to just buy my gown in the US--its cheaper), after I've booked the church, in the middle of finalizing everything, she drops this. I want to laugh and cry at the same time.

But I'm happy because now I know she doesn't want me to get married just because. At least now I know that she wants me to get married because I want to. Because I'm sure of it.

Mothers! :)
