A STICKY SITUATION
And quite yummy, too!
Halloween is my favorite holiday next to Christmas because everyone gets to be crazier than normal and the kids get goodies.
Candies are always fun, but hardly anyone gives out homemade treats these days. I amcurrently always on a tight budget so I wanted to make something cheap but delicious. I almost always have popcorn at home because, I reaaalllyyy love popcorn.(You can ask my friend, Charo. She'll tell you.) Popcorn is inexpensive and healthy, and if you're feeling indulgent (which is pretty much all the time for me), just add melted butter or a sprinkle of truffle salt and you've got yourself a good snack.
For this year's halloween treat, I decided to make some popcorn marshmallow pops. Here's what you'll need to yield a little over 50 pieces:
1 bar of butter (not a stick, a bar)
500 gms of popcorn kernels
400 gms of marshmallows
salt
Optional: rainbow sprinkles or m&m's
Of course, cook the popcorn. While the popcorn's cooking, melt the butter in a large bowl in the microwave (you can also use the stove. Whichever way you decide to melt it, be careful not to burn it). Place popcorn in a large bowl or tray once cooked.
Once the butter has melted, throw in the marshmallows and some salt, and put it back in the microwave for a minute or until marshmallows have melted. Your marshmallow and butter mixture should look somewhat like this:
Pour that over your popcorn, add your sprinkles or in my case, chocolate candies, then mix lightly to coat. You might want to use spoons to coat the popcorn as the mixture is hot.
Once the popcorn has cooled, lightly grease your hands with butter as things are about to get sticky. Shape popcorn into balls, stick a popsicle stick in the middle and that's it!

THIS IS WHAT'S UP
Some of you might be shocked but back when I was younger, I read the Bible. A LOT.
My favorite verse has always been this:
The mouth speaks out of the fullness of the heart (Matt. 12:34)
I've always loved it because it's so simple. So true.
So let me speak from my heart.
I haven't been blogging much because I had to deal with so much heartache last year. Apart from the separation which has been difficult (Now, I can actually say that I'm a-ok!), my dear Joaquin was diagnosed with Autistic Spectrum Disorder right after his 4th birthday last November.
Our Pedia noticed Joaquin's hyperactivity early last year so she asked me to set an appointment with Dr. Bernie Benitez. I called late April and the earliest appointment I got was for November. It was worth it. She was amazing and Joaquin had no difficulty liking her.
The verdict-- mild autism, because he only has a few symptoms.
His social skills are also improving. He now plays with other kids although he still has outbursts sometimes but at least it's not that often.
He's an amazing kid and right now, I'm not the least bit worried. I know he will manage beautifully.
So, that's what's up. How are you?

- Poor eye contact
- He lines up his toys
- He likes to repeat what you say
- He's obsessed with a particular toy or object (my son is obsessed with electric fans)
- During birthday parties, he'd rather play alone
- His outbursts! He cries about every little thing!
- He flaps his hands when he's super happy or excited about something
- He can't tell detailed stories. (Like if you ask him what he did in school, he'll just say, "I play.")
On the upside, Dr. Benitez says Joaquin has the smarts--she was showing him shapes and asking him to name them and was surprised that he was able to name a hexagon. She was also impressed by his memory skills.
Joaquin started pre-school last June. His teachers (nuns) were concerned because he wasn't paying attention in class and he would always go out of the classroom. He was distracting the other kids. So after our appointment with Dr. Benitez, I called the school and pulled him out.
He can still go to school, but it has to be a progressive school where the student-teacher ratio is smaller so they can pay more attention to him. I already have a couple of schools in mind.
My little boy has been going to Occupational Therapy twice a week since December. It has only been a month but I can already see the improvement.
He can now tell stories in detail. If you ask him what he had for lunch or dinner, he'll tell you. Last week, I asked him what he did with Teacher V (his therapist) and he said, "I jump on trampoline, I crawl under a tunnel and I put up boxes!". My heart jumped for joy!
He still lines up his toys (I woke up this morning and there was a carpet of aluminum foil on our floor. Should have taken a photo). His eye contact is still a problem. He doesn't repeat much of what we say anymore and wow, I just realized that I can't remember the last time he flapped his hands.

PILYO
Joaquin is now 3.5 years old and he is growing up to be very pilyo. Very talkative too.
We went to his school last Saturday to pay for tuition and while were choosing uniforms, he was talking to his Yaya and pointing at things, telling her what they were.
I was talking to the nun who conducted Joaquin's admission interview (She said she was my teacher in preschool but she was a novice then. I keep forgetting her name.) when she suddenly looks at Joaquin and says, "You know Joaquin, you're going to be a great storyteller one day!".
I smiled at her but deep inside, I was thinking, "Si Sister talaga, ang bait. Hindi na lang sinabi na madaldal yung anak ko." Hehee!

Yesterday, I was scolding Joaquin and he just wouldn't listen. So I said, "I'm going to spank you na!" and then I raised my hand and looked at him straight in the eye. He blurts, "High five, Mama! High five!"

This afternoon, I caught him with his thumb inside his mouth again. So I go, "Stop sucking your thumb!". My son looks at me and then puts 4 of his fingers inside his mouth. Then laughs.

I LOVE MY SON!
Joaquin decided to disinfect both my cellphones (my Blackberry and my very old, trusty Nokia) earlier by pouring alcohol (as in pour!) on it.
I dismantled whatever part I could take out and wiped each one dry. Then I put them back together but the keypads of both phones were malfunctioning, I couldn't even get past the password.
I got so upset that tears welled up in my eyes. I sat Joaquin on my lap, looked at him and said:
"Mama's sad. And very mad! You broke both my phones. Mama is saving money but now it looks like I have to buy new phones. I need that for work, Babe (yes, I call him that)."
My son looked at me and said, "Stop crying".
Then he wiped away my tears with his own hands.
Then he said, "Sorry, Mama."
He embraced me, patted my back while saying "It's okay, it's okay".
I felt so loved.
Then we went to sleep.

I said a short prayer of thanks.

WHY I HAD A GREAT WEEKEND
I haven't told you guys but I've been working the night shift the past couple of weeks. To be honest, I am still adjusting to the time and I sleep an average of 4 hours a day which sucks but on the good side, I get to spend more waking time with Joaquin.
I left work at around 6am last Saturday and went straight to the wet market (in jeans, wedge sandals, bangles and all. Haha!). And because I was so early, I got first dibs on the freshest fish and the best cuts of meat.
Apart from that, here are the other things that made my weekend:
1. BANANA
One of the things that I want Joaquin to love is reading. I noticed that kids today rarely read books. Everything is online or on their game consoles and I think that's just sad. The only books they probably read are those that are required by the school. So, whenever I can, I buy books for Joaquin.
A couple of weeks ago, we stopped by booksale and Joaquin picked this book out by himself. I wanted to get him a different book but he would not let go of this one so we bought it.
A couple of nights later, we found him doing this and it's funny! And cute!
And yes, he loves bananas!
2. DINNER AT 1521 with PAKNERS
1521 has great, hearty, homey food and we all swore we would back. You must must try the Kamias cooler--unbelievably refreshing, it made me regret cutting down our kamias tree at home. A dish we all loved was the sinampalukang manok, a dish I think I will crave for when I need some cheering up. Next time, I will try the binagoongan because the server said it was a specialty.
And then of course, there's the company. It was an all-girl dinner with just me, Kookie and Charo. It felt good to be out, catching up with great friends. We also got to see Kookie's new place which, like our dinner, felt like home.
3. TEMPTATION ISLAND
I have been searching for a dvd/vcd copy of this crazy funny cult classic by Joey Gosiengfiao for I don't know how long and finally finally scored one. Thanks, Kooks!!!

4. ARKAN MELON VODKA
It's been yeaaarrsss since I had a taste of this. So, when I found it standing on the top-most shelf of Market Market's Liquor Area, I grabbed it. A few village friends dropped by Sunday evening and we finished it. Hehehe!
5. MANGOSTEEN
Just because it's yummmyyy!
6. DANGGIT
Received this as pasalubong from Bea and Mark during their recent trip to Cebu. I had this for breakfast 2 days in a row. Hehehe!
7. PISTACHIO AND CASHEW ICE CREAM
When it comes to ice cream, I usually stick to my favorites--Cookies n Cream, Double Dutch or Plain ol' vanilla.
Now, my Aunt who does set design for print ads came over last Saturday to borrow our XBOX because she needed it as props for a photo shoot. When she returned it the next day, it came with 3 tubs of ice cream--2 Vanilla Macaroons (which is just too sweet for my taste) and this--Pistachio and Cream, which taste like heaven!!! Great job, Selecta!

HIGHLIGHTS OF MY WEEK
Just wanted to share highlights of my week last week:
1. Saw the Twilight premiere at Greenbelt 3 with Charo.
And yes, the book is so much better than the movie! But to see Bella, Edward, Charlie, The Cullens and everyone else on screen was such a thrill! It's been awhile since I gushed over a celebrity and I don't care if this makes me seem like a teenager again but--I love you, Rob Pattinson!!! You played Edward really well! You're the best vampire boyfriend a girl could ever have. Hahaha!
Yumyumyumyumyumyumyumyum!!!
2. How I Met Your Mother's Naked Man Episode.
Friends used to be the only show that I can watch over and over and over again and still laugh as hard. I just never get sick of it. How I Met Your Mother comes in second, thanks to the awesomeness that is Neil Patrick Harris. I really recommend this show to everyone.

Going back to last week's episode, the group came up with 50 reasons to have sex and it's quite funny!

4. I charmed my Aussie client in agreeing to not let my team come to work on Philippine holidays! I finally got to enjoy the long weekend yesterday (Bitin. But I'm looking forward to the week-long holiday in a few weeks!). :)
5. Joaquin's swimming pool (For now).
Ninang Bea (thank you again!!!) gave Joaquin an olympic-sized (baby olympics, haha!) inflatable pool for his birthday and we got to use it over the weekend.
HE WE LOVED IT! Joaquin cried when we took him out of the pool. We are hoping that this will teach him how to love the water. Hopefully, he will be ready for the beach next year!
I'm pretty sure this week will be just as great coz it's a short work week! Hooray! Have a wonderful week, guys!

JOAQUIN TURNS 2!
For Joaquin's birthday, we had a very simple merienda get-together yesterday with family.
Joaquin had tons of fun because all his cousins were there.
Bought swiss cake from Becky's Kitchen and drizzled chocolate candies on it. It was a hit with the kids!
He was sooooo happy when everyone started singing "Happy Birthday"!
Too happy that he started stomping his feet and his shoe hit a small part of the cake. Hahaha!
It was a great day! :)

HAPPY 2ND BIRTHDAY, JOAQUIN!
My Dearest Joaquin,
Happy 2nd Birthday, Baby!
It feels like only yesterday when I first saw you and cradled you in my arms.
You have given Papa and me the best years of our lives and I know that whatever happens, no matter how difficult things get, life will always always be beautiful because of you. You are our greatest blessing.

JOAQUIN'S SALON
I'm feeling a lot better. But as much as I want to make plans for the weekend, I can't.
Our helpers will be gone for the weekend. Hubby is covering the Asia Pacific Poker Tournament in Hyatt, my sister, Francine has a swimming competition (and she insists that we don't watch) at the Palarong Med in Ultra and my cousin has work till 12nn Saturday and will probably be asleep the entire day.
Joaquin and I will be home alone. While I love having him all to myself, I think he will drive me crazy because he has been such a handful lately. I guess we will live on food delivery this weekend. Hehehe!
On a totally different note, Joaquin had his nth haircut last weekend. We've tried the best kids salons in manila but he always ends up crying and we have to carry him while he's getting a haircut.
The only salon he's really comfortable in is at Little Lamb's Pediatric Wellness Place at Fun Ranch in Tiendesitas. It's pretty far from where we live but to have my son enjoy watching Barney and play with toys and not cry while getting his haircut is soo worth it.
The thing is, the other kids salons also have cartoons or Barney for the kids to watch. They also have toys for the kids. I think what sets Little Lamb apart from the other salons is the relaxing atmosphere since the place is also a spa for kids. Another would be the hair stylist/barber-- magaan ang kamay. I think his name is Jon. He's really good. The other staff are also very friendly. They would even sing along with Barney and Joaquin loves it!

And did I mention that compared to other kids salons, the haircut at Little Lamb is the cheapest at Php250.
They also offer infant massages that start at Php300 and even have a whirlpool and private room for the whole family to enjoy!

MY OWN INCREDIBLE
We're going trick or treating next Saturday and we are excited!!! I had Joaquin try on his costume to make sure it fits. This comes with a mask but he hates wearing it.
And just like Jack-Jack, he looks harmless but really isn't. Hehehe!

My sister, Marby and uber kulit Nephew, Gabe slept over last Saturday so we had lots of fun! It's really nice to see the Gabe and Joaquin together even when they're fighting over toys half the time. Hehehe!

My sister, Marby and uber kulit Nephew, Gabe slept over last Saturday so we had lots of fun! It's really nice to see the Gabe and Joaquin together even when they're fighting over toys half the time. Hehehe!

TERRIBLE TWO
Joaquin is turning 2 next month and as early as now (actually, it started a few months ago), he is already on the "Terrible Two" phase.
According to Dr. Greene:
And it really is quite terrible. Lemme tell you why:
Then: We would force him to walk.
Now: We run after him.
Then: He falls asleep before we do.
Now: We're sooo sleepy and he's still climbing up and down the bed and running around the room, etc.
Then: Loves afternoon naps.
Now: What afternoon nap?
Then: Stays and plays in his playpen.
Now: Climbs out of his playpen.
Then: We wake up with him in bed.
Now: We wake up with him standing by our bed.
Hehehehe!
